In 2005, CPT Kevin "KJ" Smith gave his life to save his teammate during a combat operation in Baghdad. That act of selfless courage became the seed from which The Mattis Foundation grew.

In 2005, while serving in Baghdad, Iraq, Adam Mattis's platoon was targeted for assassination. When the bomb detonated, CPT Kevin "KJ" Smith made the ultimate sacrifice—giving his life to save Adam's.
